1) Allora, prima di cominciare, vi devo fare i
complimenti per aver partorito un disco così devastante com'è "...And the
Cold Arrived"!
MISANTHRONE: Grazie mille, siam contenti che fino
ad ora il cd abbia ricevuto diversi consensi.
2) Presentate i Cold Empire ai lettori che non vi
conoscono.
MISANTHRONE: Nel 2006, pur trovandomi già
impegnato coi Mutilated Soul, ebbi I'idea di formare un gruppo che suonasse
black metal, genere musicale a me caro. Contattai personalmente i musicisti,
tranne Valker che fu ingaggiato dopo aver risposto ad un breve annuncio, dopo
poco iniziammo a suonare. Devo ritenermi soddisfatto perchè ho trovato persone
realmente amanti del genere, dei profondi conoscitori del Black metal fin dalle
sue radici.
3) Di cosa parlate nei vostri testi e chi li
compone?
MISANTHRONE: Mi occupo personalmente delle
liriche, amo fondere uomo e natura (rappresentata da immaginari tipici del
nostro clima, non lupi e ghiaccio), un rifugiarsi dalla società quando essa
riesce solo a generare rabbia e sconforto negli individui. I testi son pervasi
da solitudine, rabbia e rispetto verso la natura selvaggia.
4) Questa domanda potrebbe risultare banalotta ma
cosa intendete per "...E il Freddo Arrivò"? Intendete una condizione
materialistica e/o spiritualisitica?
MISANTHRONE: Entrambi, materialistica in quanto
le ambientazioni son riferite ad un periodo climaticamente freddo, spiritualistica
perchè le umane sensazioni comunicate son tutt'altro che "calde".
5) Come avviene la composizione dei pezzi e
quanto tempo è durata la loro stesura? E chi sono i principali compositori?
VALKER: La composizione dei pezzi avviene in
maniera spontanea ed istintiva, compongo solo quando ne sento il bisogno per
esprimere dei sentimenti particolari e personali in forma di riff che poi
assemblo per creare le canzoni. Se poi queste mi soddisfano passo il tutto agli
altri membri del gruppo lasciando che registrino i loro strumenti sulle mie
tracce di chitarra, quando tutta la parte strumentale è pronta rendiamo
disponibile il tutto per la stesura dei testi e di conseguenzala registrazioned
ella voce.
6) Dove li avete registrati ed in quanto tempo?
VALKER:Abbiamo registrato in casa (eccetto la
voce, registrata nello stesso studio dove è stato fatto poi il mixaggio). Il
tutto in circa 4 mesi. Personalmente non riesco a comporre a comando, mi capita
di aver dei riff e delle idee da un momento all'altro e oltre questo, abbiamo
una procedura molto lenta di solito perchè ci piace prender le cose con calma
senza forzare mai nulla, se no in caso contrario potrebbe esser penalizzata la
nostra stessa musica.
7) Il vostro black metal è molto raggelante,
sapendo essere anche vario nelle soluzioni. A questo proposito, quali sono le
Yostre pincipali influenze?
VALKER: Tutto il black metal che va dagli inizi
alla metà degli anni 90. Nello specifico il mio riffing è influenzato da gruppi
come Darkthrone, Dawn, Sacramentum, Taake, Dissection, ovviamente tutto visto
in chiave personale e non copiando del tutto lo stile di questi gruppi ed il
loro effettivo modo di suonare.
8) Dei vostri 4 pezzi, devo dire che
personalmente preferisco "Storms Will Rise" perché è quello che mi da
più emozioni, dandomi in effetti I'idea delle tempeste, è un pezzo impietoso
pieno di melodie straziate e di malvagità, veramente agghiacciante. E secondo
me è il vostro manifesto considerando che è quello che vi rappresenta al
meglio. Secondo te, invece, qual'è il vostro manifesto e perchè?
MISANTHRONE: Devo dirti che il pezzo che citi è
forse il più "violento" il titolo infatti dice tutto, personalmente
apprezzo maggiormente Forest of Hate, forse perché è l'ultima canzone composta
e si sa che le cose nuove spesso attirano di più.
VALKER: personalmente sono molto affezionato alla
canzone da te menzionata e assieme a Forest of Hate, senza dubbio, son i pezzi
migliori della demo. Entrambi esprimono musicalmente il mio stato d 'animo e la
frustrazione che mi porto dentro. In generale ogni cosa che compongo è
I'espressione dei miei sentimenti e pensieri quindi anche gli altri due pezzi
hanno molta importanza, ma quei due, tra i pezzi della demo , penso siano i
migliori che ho composto, musicalmente parlando.
9) Il vostro principale punto di forza, secondo
me, è assolutamente il gelo che trasmette ogni vostro pezzo, un gelo creato da
monumentali, impietosi riffs. A vostro avviso, invece, qual'è il vostro
principale punto di forza?
MISANTHRONE: Condivido il tuo pensiero, nel
periodo in cui è stato composto il cd ciò che più ci interessava era generare
un black decisamente a bassa temperatura, copertina, titolo e testi son venuti
da se.
VALKER: Io penso che la musica da noi proposta
sia diretta, genuina e sincera. Dettata semplicemente dai propri sentimenti
negativi che si trasformano in note. Ogni riff è parte di me, della mia vita.
Per me è più che comporre un semplice brano, metto a nudo ogni mia sensazione,
ogni mio stato d'animo (rabbia, malinconia, tristezza) ogni sensazione emessa
in riff e musica. Per questo motivo i pezzi hanno vari riff e stati d'animo.
Penso che I'ascoltatore più attento riesca a cogliere queste sensazioni e tutto
questo a mio parere credo sia il punto di forza.
10) Che significato ha la copertina? E dove avete
preso il soggetto rappresentato?
MISANTHRONE: Come detto finora il tema conduttore
è il freddo e non potevamo non utilizzare un paesaggio simile da fondere al
contesto lirico-musicale. L'artwork è opera del nostro carissimo amico
Vandenis, egli ha sfruttato una foto naturalistica della sua terra, la

11) Cos'è, secondo voi, il black metal?
MISANTHRONE: E' veramente difficile rispondere,
non ti dirò le solite cose perchè non mi piace utilizzare dei clichè
predefiniti e che non condivido, ti posso dire che personalmente il black ha
accompagnato delle fasi della mia vita in cui ciò che più regnava sovrano era
la mia persona, la perfetta colonna sonorat ra il proprio ego e il distaccato
mondo che lo circonda.
VALKER: Black metal è espressione di se stessi e
dei propri sentimenti negativi non ha nulla a che vedere con presunti e finti
proclami di odio e altre menate che molte persone al giorno d'oggi sparano senza
sentirne il reale bisogno, la stragrande maggioranza lo fa giusto per apparire
ciò che non sono e per far parlare di loro cercando di attirare l'attenzione
quando magari ciò che conta realmente, cioè la musica, viene meno.
12) Considerando che la Sardegna in questi ultimi
anni si sta dimostrando come una vera e propria fucina di talenti, cosa ne
pensate della sua scena estrema? Ed invece di quella italiana più in generate?
MISANTHRONE: Immaginati la scena sarda come un
grande paese, spesso si finisce per fare qualcosa solo perchè lo fa il
"vicino di casa". Ciò non toglie che i buoni musicisti ci siano e
attualmente anche la qualità ne ha giovato. Dell'ltalia in genere non sono un
grandissimo conoscitore, ho notato comunque che diversi nomi stan venendo fuori,
e i sacrifici stanno pagando.
VALKER: Ti ringrazio di avermelo fatto notare
perchè non me n'ero accorto. Io personalmente non approvo e approverò mai il
supporto incondizionato solo in virtù della provenienza, se un gruppo è valido,
lo è e basta, se non mi piace non c'è scena che tenga.
13) Vi apprezzo anche per un piccolo dettaglio,
ossia non usate il face-painting, che in molti casi a mio avviso è abbastanza
opinabile, senz'offesa per nessuno. A questo proposito, perchè non lo usate? O
lo usate per i concerti?
MISANTHRONE: Qui tocchi un punto dolente, in
origine io avevo I'intenzione di usare il make up, la metà dei componenti non
era d'accordo e non se ne fece nulla. L'abbandonare I' idea è stata anche una
scelta legata al fatto che tale rappresentazione non si sposa con le ideologie
del gruppo. Comunque pur ancora apprezzandolo in parte, lo ritengo poco
originale e , visto I'uso improprio che se ne fa spesso, imbarazzante.
VALKER: Trovo ridicolo farsi il face painting
oggigiorno, solo per esternare una presunta "malignità" in cui ormai
non crede più nessuno e che nella vita di tutti i giorni sicuramente non
esiste. A suo tempo I'uso del face painting era un'espressione di rabbia e di
ribellione seguita non solo da semplici proclami che chiunque può fare, ma da
fatti reali. Oggi viene usato come un ornamento, un clichè. Non ne faccio uso
per rispetto a tutto ciò che è stato il black metal nel suo periodo di massima
espressione e perchè non lo sento dentro! E' una cosa che solo in pochi in quel
periodo potevan permettersi di fare, perché loro ci credevano e lo sentivano
dentro.
14) Abbracciate qualche ideologia d i tipo
religioso? Che ne so, il paganesimo ecc...ecc...?
MISANTHRONE: Nessuna religione, semplicemente nei
testi puoi giusto trovare qualche citazione anti-cristiana, figlia della
disapprovazione per qualsiasi tipo di credenza.
VALKER: Per me ciò che conta è la musica tutto il
resto è ornamento superfluo, non credo in nessuna forma di religione o
quant'altro.
15) Come siete arrivati a firmare per la Bleak
Art Records?
MISANTHRONE: Era appena uscito il demo, da un
mese circa, e ci contattò Joe (il ragazzo che gestisce I'etichetta), il quale
ci propose un contratto per una release. Fummo entiusiasti della cosa visto che
non ci aspettavamo di trovare subito qualcuno che promuovesse la nostra musica. Ora speriam
che tutto procede nel migliore dei modi.
16) Qualche gruppo della vostra etichetta da
consigliare?
MISANTHRONE: Dark Forest, Lutemkrat (
solo-progetto black brasiliano che lo consiglio a tutti! Nda), Eisenfeld, Black
Lotus ma anche gli altri son ottimi gruppi, il mastermind Joe Scott ha degli
ottimi gusti!
VALKER: Lutemkrat, CofIin Birth, Aenaon e poi i
Dark Forest che stanno avendo molta visibilita.
17) Domanda delicata: perchè il precedente
bassista Necrocultus se n'è andato dal gruppo un anno fa? E come avete trovato
il nuovo bassista VN?
MISANTHRONE: Semplicemente perchè non c'erano i
presupposti per continuare nella condivisione del progetto. Contattai VN visto
che è il bassista di un noto gruppo della zona, i Verbo Nero, che son dei cari
amici, ed è sicuramente il bassista della scena pù legato al genere.
18) Qualcosa in programma per voi tra altri
dischi, concerti ecc...ecc...?
MISANTHRONE: Per ora occuparci del full lenght,
che dovrebbe venire alla luce tra il 2008 e il 2009, stiam lavorando alle
registrazioni con estrema calma. Per il resto di concerti attualmente non ne
abbiamo in programma, di certo non siamo una band da tour, ma non escludo
qualche esibizione per promuovere il disco in futuro.
VALKER: per quanto riguarda i concerti, non è una
priorità al momento e penso che se ce ne saranno si trattera di esibizioni
sporadiche. Non reputiamo il live una cosa fondamentale per una band black
metal.
19) L'intervista è finita, adesso siete liberi,
volete dare un messaggio ai lettori di "Timpani allo Spiedo" (bello
il nome vè?)?
MISANTHRONE: Beh nome simpatico e originale,
almeno vi distinguete! E poi sono i contenuti che contano. Grazie a voi per lo
spazio e per I'attenzione. L.'unico "dio" è il sole, lui dà la vita e
lui ce la toglierà.
VALKER: il nome è molto originale non c'è che
dire eheheh. T i ringrazio per I'opportunità che ci hai dato in questa
interessante intervista. Per quanto riguarda il messaggio non mi sento di darne
alcuno, i proclami mi hanno sempre dato fastidio, posso però consigliare di
supportare la buona musica e non gli stereotipi; il supporto incondizionato fa
male sia alle band che meritano sincerità nel bene e nel male, che agli
ascoltatori che diventano incapaci di distinguere. Un saluto a te e ai lettori.

Hi dear, not bad thank you. Oh now I’m listening and watching to the video of
“Wasting Love” of Iron Maiden

Ok! Let’s start now… I have to confess you that it’s a pleasure interview you,
‘cause your demo has completely kill me and I’ve listen to it thousand times
but first of all, please introduce Cold Empire to the readers.
MISANTHRONE:
Thank you manI! We appreciate it, really!
I
always had the desire of singing in a black metal band, so I decided to do that
in 2006 when I met other guys that joined me in this project.

You have chosen to present your work in a professional way, starting form the
packaging ‘till the quality of sound and, fuck! it’s a pure icy storm… however
your sound isn’t amateurishly or improvised but this doesn’t mean plastic or
polite! Raw sound but selective. Are you satisfied with the final result? Can
you tell me something about the recording sessions?
VALKER:
First of all, thanks for your consideration. Yes, we are satisfied with our
work, but at the same time, we will offer a better quality in our upcoming
debut album; as you said, our sound is not plastified, and it will never be
like that in the future, because we think that black metal has a proper raw
sound but on the other hand the listener must at least understand the riffing
and the melody in the sound, with a primordial impact also, which is given by
the raw sound of the guitars. About the recording sessions, we had lots of
troubles, and that’s mainly because of the home recording and also due to the
fact that I was at my first experience. We entered a studio just to mix and
master the entire demo, so I think this made our work sound so direct and
genuine as the good old black metal was.

All your songs are surrounded by a cryptic winter atmosphere, so I have to ask
you why are you fascinated by winter and cold?
VALKER:
I think the atmosphere you mentioned is a result of the fact that music just
communicates a particular and personal feeling, shared by all the guys of the
band.

The subjects of your lyrics seem deal with nature, misanthropy and hate. Am I
wrong? Can you explain the concept behind Cold empire? Which are the emotions
and messages you wont spread with your music and what is the main motivation
that gives you the strength to play this kind of music?
MISANTHRONE:
I write all the lyrics, I say you: "When a man is far from society, alone,
he can think better about his existence, he will realize that there is always
something to hate, nature is the only pure thing we have. People have to stop
and think .”

Talking about your music I have noticed a strong influence of the old Swedish
scene. For example one of the riffs on “Storm will rise” has an atmosphere
similar to “The Somberlain” of the mighty Dissection and more in general
Dissection seems to me an evident influence. What do you think about? Which are
your main influences?
VALKER:
You’re the first one who notices this. Dissection are one of my very first
influences; I love the first two albums, as, I believe, many of the bands that
play this music today; although I don’t have the intention to copy their
riffing but I just re – elaborate the imprinting they left in me. Also the
first Darkthrone, Sacramentum, Dawn, Horna, Taake influenced my guitar work and
songwriting.

All your songs have great and absolutely killer arrangements, how much is
important he arrangement aspect for your band? And in particular the vocal
lines have completely raped my soul and it’s something uncommon in the nowadays
underground, it seems that nothing is casual in your music, am I wrong?
VALKER:
not at all, you’re right! Even if at first sight ours can seem the typical raw
black metal platter, every choice is carefully planned. I dedicate much time to
the songwriting, and when it comes to the arrangements I want all things to be
perfect, and the sound to be the one I wanted. For “perfect” I mean, the whole
work with its details and, you know, also the little defects which are
considered and planned. The songs must be dynamic to capture the attention of
the listener, and the arrangement must help the song expressing the feeling
that I want to communicate.
MISANTHRONE:
Thank you once again, I am very happy to hear this, I think vocals are cold
like the music ehe

Some of your songs have a distant feeling… distant from humanity… do you like
solitude? Do you think humanity deserve to be saved or did you like to see
human race burning as Nerone done with
VALKER:
I usually don’t care about humanity and try to keep myself away from these
cunts. So, the music surely reflects this thought of mine.
MISANTHRONE:
I’m rather egoistic and misanthrope, I often have to stay alone. I'm not
interested in mankind
9)
Who is the main writer and how born a Cold Empire song? Are the lyrics an
important aspect or you prefer concentrate on music and in which way they are
connected with music?
VALKER:
It’s quite simple, I do create the music in a spontaneous way, while playing my
guitar and the riffs come in my mind in an instinctive way. I compose and play
only when I feel like doing it or need to express my feelings in music. My
music is something very personal. That’s all. Once I’ve got those riffs, I
create the whole song, and when it satisfies me I pass the song to the drummer
and bass player; they complete the work with their instruments as they please.
About the lyrics, Misanthrone is their author, and he writes all basing his
feelings on the ones expressed in the song. All this happens in a spontaneous
way.
MISANTHRONE:
Lyrics are the final work, last but not least. Music and words move
always in the same way

One of my ‘fave song is “Storm will Rise”. Can you tell me something about the
lyrics and the emotions closed under those raw notes?
MISANTHRONE:
I sing “I've lived in the past for years and years feeding my hate against the
sky,
despising
the sun and the light upon the earth, blessing the day that all will die”
I think this is the best way to answer

Are you a live band? Do you think the stage is the right place for Black Metal?
VALKER:
We are not considering the possibility to play live at the moment as a main
one. We concentrate on our debut album. In the future, we could get on stage as
well, if there will be a right chance to do it. About the live aspect in black
metal I don’t think it’s necessary; many of the bm bands we know don’t play
many gigs, although they are indeed great artists; I can’t deny, on the other
hand, that the audience gets easily involved by black metal music in the gigs;
but if playing live meant for us only a crowd of headbanging guys with no idea
of the feelings we want to express, I’d surely prefer not to play at all and
leave the listeners the possibility to listen to our music at home, alone.

What do you think about Satanism? I’m asking you ‘couse there isn’t trace of it
in your music and in the visual aspect. Is something you care about? Do you
consider yourself as a pagan (I’m asking you due to the evident fascination for
nature…) and what do you think of christ and his followers? VALKER: none of those two options. Nature can be seen in many
metaphorical ways. In my opinion it is quite stupid to show a Satanist or pagan
attitude. My goal is not to spread proclaims; it is to vent all my deep
sensations and put them into music.
MISANTHRONE:
I am born christian, now I am atheist and I will die atheist, there is no god
or satan. I love and respect only real things like the nature. I don’t like to
talk about the followers of christ, the sheeps follow their sheperd

What represent black metal for you? Is something that has change your life or
is just music?
VALKER:
Black metal is the expression of a multitude of deep, dark and heinous feelings
we couldn’t express with any other kind of metal.
MISANTHRONE:
Absolutely agree with Valker

Do you believe in the underground? Do you buy stuff from distro, trade with
maniacs and shit on?
VALKER:
I believe in underground, but I only support bands which are worth it in my
opinion; I’m glad of knowing new bands with talent but it’s not like I give my
support to every band just because it’s “underground”.
MISANTHRONE:
I believe in good music, I don’t buy a lot of stuff but I like to support
friends

During the listening of your songs my thoughts are gone to K. Hamsun’s book
“Pan”. Do you know this book? Do you like read and what are you reading
now?
MISANTHRONE:
I know “Pan” but I have never read it, I love books about crime news and
holocaust, now I’m reading “The great solved and unsolved italian crimes”

VALKER:
Among the underground ones: Fearbringer, Altar Shadows, Sokrovenno, Ymir (the

VALKER:
Among our future plans there is surely our first full length which is soon to
come; we’ll also make some gigs if there will be chance; of course, we’ll keep

I hope to do a good debut cd with the band and maybe some fucking evil

01. Hail Misanthrone! How
are the things in Cold Empire? And apart of saying me a histroy of your
band can you refer yourself if you describe your band as a black metal or pagan
metal band?
Hi to everybody,
actually we're so happy for the first reviews of "...And The Cold
Arrived" we hope it can continue. Anyway I can describe Cold Empire simply
like a black metal band, maybe you can find a pagan attitude in our music and
maybe we have but it wasn't an expected thing. Misanthropic black metal I think
is perfect for us.
02. Before creating Cold
Empire you are also a vocalist Mutilated Soul which is a death metal band. What
pushed you to start a black metal band in the vein of early 90's?
I I started as black metal singer but
my old band splitted-up before recording some kind of material, so I couldn't
"live" without black metal and fortunately last year I have had the
chance to create a new project. Now I am proud to play with other guys. Black
metal is my blood.
03. Do you practice your vocals often? Which
vocals are harder to create: brutal death or black metal screams with some
might speaches?
How I've said before I started in
black metal so I'm at my ease with screaming vocals, they are more natural for
me, for what concerns growls they need more power and resistance, it is a
muscular work.
04. You debut demo
contains four tracks highly influenced by early 90's nordic scene abd I would
say that keeping up the unholy flame of tradition is very good but what do you
want to say to these who might say that you are just copying well known and
tested ways of black metal? We know that someone will say it but we love this kind of black metal
and principally we do music for us. We want to render thanks to the nordic gods
of early 90's.
05. In other words: how
would you describe your band on both level musical and lyrical? Where do you
see your ideas, something fresh that you add to your music apart from
traditional nordic bm? Our ideas born listening to metal everyday, the lyrical and musical work
is simply the result of all our experiences, we search to do something
"fresh" but always in the traditional way.
06. Will you agree if I say that for your
music and aura created on demo there is no better name for band than Cold
Empire?
Yes of course, we wanted to combine all
these elements to hold the line with our musical approach, from the title to
the lyrics then the sound, all is cold.
07. To be honest I was
surprised while listening to your demo of its high quality. The antihuman aura
and hatred is almost visible on this record and what is most important that it
is made by typical metal instruments. So is it only about influences or to record
and compose such music it has be a part of yourself?
Thanks man, the influences are very
important but Valker worked very hard to find a good sound for this release, I
think it is personal in some way, you know we don't try to invent something, we
do what we like.
08. Negativity, hatred,
nihilism, depression, even suicidal... For me this elements are incuded in your
music so can you explain what all these aspects mean to you? Is it everyday
life to deal with such emotions?
You hit the mark, those are the hidden
aspects of everyday's life, it's normal to play with angry when the world
outside is full of shit, we have to pour hate in music!
09. Cold Empire also discover the matters
connected with dark nature what can be clearly seen on the demo cover. Is the
expression of yourselves with all your insides begining from antihuman position
to philosophy hidden among the symbolism of mother nature is enough? What else
can we expect from you?
We think that a nature's image can reflect perfectly the human feelings,
expecially if we talk about a forest image, it can be used very well to
represent the dark feelings. I think that is a kind of "antihuman
thought", an escape to the society to find refuge in the darkness. We will
continue to work with these symbolisms and our personal artist Vandenis
(myspace.com/vandenis) will show another time his talent.
10. What about private life? Are the
members of Cold Empire so not social persons? What do you do in your life
beside of playing?
I'm an employee, Dark shadow studies at
university and Valker works in a little family company. We don't like society
life very much, we prefer to stay with not much friends, or alone, listen to
and play music alot.
11. On you picture one of you if I good see
it is wearing a t-shirt with polish death metal band rauma. So is our scene
well known to you? What bands do you worship? And if we are speaking so what black
metal scene you admire mostly in the world and
why?
I'm sorry man but was a Taake t-shirt
ahaha, anyway we know the polish scene of course, there are many bands I like
such Behemoth, Decapitated, Hate, Vader, Massemord, Graveland, Vesania and
more. About black metal scene in genre I think that the masters live in
12. Can you tell me about your live
gigs?
We have never played live shows and
actually we aren't thinking to do it in a short time, we don't have a bassist
player in the line up at the moment but it's possible that the 2008 can be the
perfect year to begin to freeze the stages.
13. Is Mutilated Soul your only one other
band or you play in others? Please describe music of them as well with
Mutilated Soul.
I don't have other projects except
Mutilated Soul. The band were formed in late 2003, we play fast and aggressive

14. Recently we can see that in black metal
there is some new genre called 'religious bm' and the best example is swedish
Watain. What do you think about it? Isn't it like being a puppet in Satan's
hands (same as christian pigs in god's
hands)?
I like Watain for their music but I never
interested for their lyrics, 'religious bm' needs people that really believe in
those things (so there are not much), I only say: do what you want to do. I
prefer to speak about my dark thoughts, loneliness, nature and personal visions
of human decay.
15. In summer 2008 you will release a debut
album for Bleak Art Records. Can you tell me did you agree for the deal? And
aren't you affraid to sign to this new label? You can also mention about new
tracks for the album - what can we expect?
Joe (owner of B.A.R.) showed his interest
immediately, we have not been afraid to sign with him because it didn't take
much effort to understand that his proposal was interesting so we hope to work
well together next future. About new tracks I can say that we will do the possible
to be cold as the debut, don't worry.

La parola ai Cold Empire, gruppo black metal
sardo e autore di uno dei piu' bei demo black metal in circolazione…
1) Ciao ragazzi,descrivete ai lettori di
MetalBeta come sono nati i Cold Empire…
MISANTHRONE: Ciao a tutti, i C.E. nascono
esattamente un anno fa, il mio intento era di avere un gruppo stabile che
suonasse black metal e ciò si è concretizzato quando sono riuscito a reclutare
le persone giuste con cui abbiamo registrato questo cd, Dark Shadow alla
batteria e Valker alla chitarra, il principale compositore dei pezzi. Del
gruppo faceva parte anche il bassista Necrocultus ma dopo la registrazione del
demo, e per ragioni personali, ha deciso di interrompere il progetto.
2) Ha qualche significato particolare il vostro
monicker?
MISANTHRONE: Cito una frase presente nella nostra
pagina ufficiale myspace "Il freddo impero è l'umanità senza emozioni ma è
anche una foresta incantata in pieno inverno" questo perché
l'interpretazione è ambivalente, natura da una parte, uomo dall'altra.
3) Parlateci della Demo …And The Cold Arrived, come
e'stato il processo creativo del disco?
MISANTHRONE: Come accennato prima la musica è
stata principalmente composta da Valker, io ho trovato le linee vocali e Dark
Shadow ha integrato alla perfezione le parti di batteria, il processo
compositivo futuro invece verrà distribuito maggiormente tra i membri,
cercheremo comunque di proseguire il percorso musicale intrapreso in
precedenza.
DARK SHADOW: Sì, in futuro cambieremo anche il
metodo compositivo: abbandoneremo la sala e ci rintaneremo in casa, ognuno a
lavorare sul suo strumento e su ogni singolo aspetto dei nuovi brani.
4) Sin dal primo ascolto ho notato l'ispirazione
a gruppi Svedesi e soprattutto alla Norvegia, quali sono le band che amate di
più?
MISANTHRONE: Direi Taake, Dawn, Darkthrone,
Sacramentum su tutti ma comunque il filone black scandinavo in generale che ha
imperversato nei primi anni 90, adoriamo questa musica e la riteniamo un filo
conduttore tra i nostri sentimenti.
5) Qual e' il messaggio che i Cold Empire vogliono
trasmettere attraverso la loro musica?
MISANTHRONE: Io lo definirei un auto-messaggio,
riferendomi particolarmente ai testi posso definirli come un "pensare a
voce alta" una sorta di riflessione su quello che è il mio stato d'animo
interpretato in chiave metaforica. Tutto ciò può essere ovviamente
reinterpretato da chi sente/legge la nostra musica, non cerchiamo di insegnare
ne inventare nulla, siamo quelli che sentite su cd.
DARK SHADOW: Non cerchiamo di trasmettere nessun
tipo di messaggio. Come ha detto Misanthrone, non insegniamo niente; semmai,
saremmo immensamente soddisfatti se un giorno anche una sola persona che ha
sentito il cd, leggendo i testi, venisse a dirci che è riuscita a fuggire dal
pallido squallore quotidiano, anche se per poco più di 20 minuti!
6) Spesso si legge che i gruppi black metal
italiani non vengono considerati molto all'estero, cosa ne'pensate di questo?
MISANTHRONE: Beh ci facciamo male da soli, spesso
le proposte sono troppo approssimative e non mi riferisco solo alla qualità
delle registrazioni ma anche alle idee, suonare black è diventata una cosa
semplice al giorno d'oggi, farlo bene no.
DARK SHADOW: Sì, il problema (o un aspetto di
esso) è che la gente, soprattutto quella che si avvicina in età adolescenziale
al black metal, sottovaluta la buona musica, e predilige altre contingenze come
il dipingersi la faccia, scrivere proclami di odio e insomma il calarsi
totalmente in un personaggio fittizio. Tutto questo fa sì, come dicevo prima,
che al momento di formare una band priorità quali comporre buona musica e
registrarla degnamente, passino tristemente in secondo piano, risaltando più
l'apparire che non la sostanza.
7) Chi sono i Cold Empire nella vita di tutti i
giorni?
MISANTHRONE: Io sono impiegato in un call center,
Valker gestisce una piccola azienda di famiglia e Dark Shadow studia
all'università, potremmo sembrare benestanti ma non è così!
8) Come sono stati i responsi delle testate che
hanno recensito la Demo?
MISANTHRONE: Per ora abbiamo solo due recensioni,
tra cui la vostra, entrambe molto positive, speriamo di proseguire su questa
strada, non può solo che farci piacere! Comunque il cd è uscito circa 2
settimane fa e stiamo aspettando notizie da diverse webzine a cui abbiamo
spedito i cd, vi terremo aggiornati puntualmente sul sito.
9) Avete in programma qualche data live per
proporre i vostri pezzi nell'imminente futuro?
MISANTHRONE: Nei programmi imminenti non vi sono
live, perché non è una cosa che al momento reputiamo prioritaria, vedremo in un
prossimo futuro.
DARK SHADOW: Al momento la nostra priorità è
scrivere nuovi pezzi, abbiamo appena iniziato e questo ci basta. Il live è solo
un contorno, tralaltro anche abbastanza inutile se fatto non nell'ambiente
giusto e con le giuste persone.
10) Com'e' la scena metal in Sardegna? Ci sono
gruppi validi che vi piacciono?
MISANTHRONE: La scena metal è viva e vegeta e
nell'isola ci sono diversi gruppi validi, restando in ambito estremo direi:
Verbo Nero, Vultur, Ancient Skin, Smashhead, Mutilated Soul e altri (ho citato
i primi che mi son venuti in mente non me ne vogliate).
DARK SHADOW: Secondo me in Sardegna non esiste
una vera e propria "scena": ci sono alcuni gruppi, anche di buon
livello (e non lo dico io, basta leggere le recensioni di varie webzine), ma finisce
qui. E'tutto molto slegato, non c'è coesione e non esiste una visione
d'insieme, una coscienza comune. Per questo, ripeto, per me non c'è una scena;
solamente un discreto numero di buonissimi gruppi.
11) C'e'spazio per concerti da voi, i locali sono
disposti a far suonare gruppi metal?
MISANTHRONE: Nota dolente, i locali ci sono ma
sono sempre gli stessi a dare lo spazio al metal estremo, a Cagliari forse solo
un locale si occupa seriamente di creare eventi di rilievo, un po' poco direi.
12) Ritorniamo alla demo, credete di essere riusciti appieno ad
esprimere le vostre potenzialità,oppure cambiereste qualcosa?
MISANTHRONE: Sicuramente non si è mai soddisfatti
appieno del prodotto, il feeling che vuole trasmettere il disco è certamente in
linea con ciò che ci eravamo proposti ma per quanto riguarda la resa sonora
questa poteva essere sicuramente migliore, lavoreremo in futuro per creare
qualcosa di più professionale questo è certo!
DARK SHADOW: Per quanto mi riguarda, la
produzione del cd mi soddisfa abbastanza: la cosa migliore sono le chitarre,
son venute fuori veramente gelide! Per il resto, avrei voluto che ogni
strumento suonasse più potente, avesse più "spinta", come si dice in
gergo. Ma non mi lamento, non dimentichiamoci che è pur sempre una demo!
13) Oltre ai Cold Empire qualcuno di voi ha altri
progetti paralleli?
MISANTHRONE: Attualmente soltanto io ho un
progetto parallelo avviato, tra l'altro da 4 anni, chiamato Mutilated Soul.
14) Ok ragazzi,grazie per la chiacchierata! Lascio

MISANTHRONE: Grazie di cuore a te per lo spazio

1. Ciao Danix raccontami
dei Cold Empire

Ciao Dave, I C.E. nascono da una mia precisa idea di suonare la musica che amo
e ascolto di più, il black metal è la musica che meglio si abbina al mio modo
di pensare, interpreta perfettamente il lato oscuro dei miei sentimenti e lo
stesso discorso vale per i miei compagni d'avventura.
2. Com'è la scena li' in Sardegna? Fate molti concerti? Hai
qualche gruppo in particolare da segnalare?
(Misanthrone)
Se non ci fossero alcuni locali che ci salvano la situazione sarebbe molto
critica! troppo pochi gli spazi dove esibirsi; la scena cmq è degna di nota e
ci sono diversi gruppi validi, posso citarti i Tregenda, Chaoswave, Vultur,
Verbo Nero, Mutilated Soul, Smashhead.
(Dark Shadow) Aggiungerei gli Holy Martyr, il cui cd dovrebbe
uscire a breve per Dragonheart.
3. Leggendo il blog, presente sulla vostra pagina myspace,
sono venuto a sapere che siete in piene "recording sessions". Come
stanno andando le cose?
(Dark Shadow) Bene, stiamo facendo tutto a casa nostra
praticamente! Io registro le parti di batteria, poi le passo a Valker che ci
mette sopra le chitarre. Per ora siamo fermi a batteria e chitarra, tra
pochissimo verrà il turno del basso e poi, una volta finito il tutto,
Misanthrone ci metterà sopra i suoi lamenti hahaha! Quindi speriamo di ultimare
il demo entro al massimo un mese, e siamo piuttosto fiduciosi che uscirà un buon
prodotto, soprattutto tenendo presente che stiamo lavorando per conto nostro,
senza nessun aiuto.
4. Sara' un demo di 4 canzoni. Come nascono i vostri pezzi?
(Misanthrone) I pezzi sono principalmente delle creazioni di
Valker, egli è stato molto bravo ed ha saputo tirare fuori il meglio di se in
alcuni momenti importanti della sua vita. In futuro la stesura dei brani avrà
una collaborazione maggiore da parte del sottoscritto.
5. Chi scrive le "Lyrics"? E di cosa parlano?
(Misanthrone) Dei testi me ne occupo io, cerco di trasportare
l'angoscia in parole, mi faccio coinvolgere dalla musica e ciò che ne viene
fuori è solo puro malessere, solitudine, odio, misantropia e natura.
6. Avete dei progetti paralleli ai Cold Empire?
(Misanthrone) Come già anticipato nella seconda domanda io ho già
un progetto attivo dal 2003, i Mutilated Soul, gli altri ragazzi attualmente si
dedicano solo ai Cold, solamente Necrocultus ha dei progetti in cantiere.
7. Qual'è stata l'esperienza avuta con i Cold Empire, che vi
ha gratificato di piu'?
(Misanthrone) Sarebbe meglio dire: "Quale sarà?"
ovviamente essendo attivi da meno di un anno e non avendo ancora suonato dal
vivo non possiamo citare degli episodi particolari, ora pensiamo a fare sto cd
al meglio poi tireremo le somme.
(Dark Shadow) Mah, dal momento che ci siamo formati nel Luglio
dello scorso anno e non abbiamo ancora esordito dal vivo, non saprei dirti...
forse il momento più bello è stata la nostra prima prova in assoluto con
Valker, ci eravamo preparati "Begravelsesnatt" dei Gorgoroth e
"In the Shadow of the Horns" dei Darkthrone, e mentre le suonavamo in
sala ci guardavamo col sorriso... era la nostra prima volta insieme ma l'intesa
sembrava già delle migliori hehehe!
8. Cosa ne pensate della scena metal italiana, nn solo dei
gruppi, ma soprattutto di chi gestisce le cose dietro le quinte. Ovvero Case
discografiche, agenzie che organizzano concerti e, che speculano sulla passione
dei gruppi stessi, cercando di guadagnare a discapito di quest'ultimi.

Son cose risapute, ci si ruba il pane di bocca a vicenda, il mercato
dell'underground è povero e chiunque farebbe di tutto per accaparrarsi
qualcosa, soldi però se ne vedono pochi e spesso anche l'amore per quel che si
fa, meno male che esistono delle eccezioni.
9.
Qual'è l' obbiettivo principale, che volete ottenere con la vostra musica?
(Misanthrone) direi riuscire a raggiungere ogni volta la piena
soddisfazione personale, cercare di trasmettere a chi ascolta qualche minima
sensazione, son cose difficili soprattutto perchè in musica tutto è stato fatto
e nulla s'inventa più.
